Buying heating oil in Northern Ireland

Heating oil prices change often and differ between suppliers and areas. These tips, mostly from the Consumer Council, help you pay less and avoid costly mistakes.

Compare heating oil prices

Compare dated prices before you order

Prices can change from day to day and differ between areas, so compare prices for your postcode and check when each was last updated. When you order, agree the full price including VAT, and when it will be delivered.

300, 500 or 900 litres?

Bigger orders often cost less per litre, so if your tank has room and you can afford it, compare the 500 and 900 litre prices.

If money is tight, the Consumer Council suggests ordering a smaller amount than you normally would rather than going without.

Avoid emergency oil drums

20-litre drums from petrol stations are very expensive for the amount you get. Keep them for real emergencies, and order before you run low.

Join an oil buying club

The Northern Ireland Oil Buying Network negotiates lower prices with suppliers for its members every week. It's run by the Housing Executive's Energy Advice Service and is open to every household in Northern Ireland, whether you own or rent. To register, call 0800 111 4455 or text 07823 535 178.

Spread the cost

  • Oil stamps: buy £5 stamps from local shops and some credit unions, collect them on a savings card and use them towards your next order. Councils taking part include Antrim and Newtownabbey, Belfast, Causeway Coast and Glens, Derry and Strabane, Mid and East Antrim, and Mid Ulster.
  • PayPoint budgeting card: the Northern Ireland Oil Federation's card lets you pay towards your oil a bit at a time, from £10 a payment.

Help with the cost: £100 oil voucher

Households who use oil as their main heating and get a qualifying income-related benefit, a disability benefit, or have a yearly income under £30,000 (after certain deductions) can apply for a £100 voucher. Applications opened on 9 September 2026 and close on 31 March 2027. The Consumer Council has the details.

Look after your boiler and tank

  • Have your boiler serviced regularly by an OFTEC-registered engineer so it runs efficiently and safely.
  • Don't tip your tank to get the last of the oil out. It can damage the pipes and stir up sediment.
  • Lock your tank and boiler housing, keep gates locked, and consider screening the tank from the road and fitting security lighting.

Questions, answered

When is the best time to buy heating oil?

Nobody can reliably predict oil prices. The best you can do is compare dated prices regularly and order before you run low, so you're never forced to buy at a bad moment or rely on emergency drums.

Is it cheaper to order more oil at once?

Often the price per litre is lower for bigger orders, so compare 500 and 900 litres if your tank has room.
